Purpleheart or Amaranth is a Central and South American species known for its deep purple heartwood as the name often times leads on. When Purpleheart is first cut into lumber it tends to be a grayish/purplish brown which with sun exposure slowly turns darker and darker till an eggplant purple is present. Further aging of the wood can cause it to turn brown completely but don't worry about it losing what its named for as at lease a tinge of purple will last. The grain is usually straight with the chance of some waviness or irregular looks. Texturing is commonly rated as medium and a good natural luster is present. Purpleheart is rated as very durable when it comes to durability and is resistant to both decay and insects making the lumber rather useful in many applications.
