This is a lasting result of a past fungal infection that the tree had endured during its life, often times resulting in the marketing name of Pecky Cypress. The standard grain is often straight with a medium to coarse texture and Being durable as it is, Cypress lumber is often the wood of choice for dock construction, boats building, and a multitude of other outdoor projects.
